Day-hike: Grasleitenkopf

What to expect

The hike over the peaks of Grasleitenstein (1267m) and Grasleitenkopf (1434m) is a relatively unknown, very beautiful route to the Lenggrieser Hut. It goes up above Lenggries via easy (but sometimes quite steep paths covered with tree-roots), and despite the relatively low altitude you have a great view of the Isar valley. The popular Lenggrieser Hut (1338m) is also on the way down, where we stop for lunch before take the small hiking path of Grasleitensteig back to Lenggries.

We start at Lenggries train station soon leaving the town behind on a wide forest path passing farmhouses and soon leading uphill into the forest. After reaching the end of the forest path we follow a narrow hiking path steeper uphill and reach the peak of Grasleitenstein with a viewing bench, which offers the best view of this tour. We follow the path over the wide ridge until we arrive at Grasleitenkopf shortly after with a cross at its peak. From here it is a very short descent on a narrow hiking path to Lenggrieser Hütte, where we have lunch. On our way down we follow the narrow hiking path of Grasleitensteig until we get back to the wide forest path that leads back to Lenggries.

Physical requirements

You need to be able to walk comfortably on narrow hiking paths, which are at times covered with lose rocks and tree roots, uphill for 3 hours in total with a small break every hour. The whole hike will take approximately 5 hours of walking with shorter sit-down breaks every hour and a longer break at the hut a short hike after the summit.
