Day-hike: Baumgartenschneid

What to expect

The Baumgartenschneid at lake Tegernsee is one of the classic hiking routes in Munich's local mountains and is an attractive destination in all seasons. Yet, the ascent route runs for a long time in the shady forest, which makes the tour attractive especially in the hot summer months. The hike up to the summit is along easy hiking paths and at the top you enjoy a great view over the lake. On the way down there is a lunch stop at the Riedersteinhaus and one can visit the chapel of the Riederstein.

Tour

We start at Tegernsee train station soon leaving the busy streets behind us on a wide road from which after a while a narrow hiking path, called Prinzenweg, goes up in serpentines to the gentle green meadows of Baumgartenalm. Once out of the forest, it is only a short hike over the meadow to the peak og Baumgartenschneid. The hike down continues on narrow hiking paths via the peak of Rohrkopf. We stop at the hut of Riederstnhaus for lunch, where we can also visit the small chapel of Riederstein. From the hut we take a wide forest path all the way back down to lake Tegernsee, where we can enjoy a swim before heading to the train station.

Physical requirements

You need to be able to walk comfortably on narrow hiking paths, which are at times covered with lose rocks and tree roots, uphill for 3 hours in total with a small break every hour. The whole hike will take approximately 5 hours of walking with shorter sit-down breaks every hour and a longer break at the hut a short hike after the first summit.

Length: 14 km, 750 meter ascent
Duration: 5 hrs walking, 10 hrs total
